Built in 1726, this temple is famous for carvings in its main hall that are considered among the best in Taiwan. Its two central columns were carved from white stones of Quanzhou in Fujian Province. It is similar in style to the Longshan Temple in Lukang.

The temple's main element is a memorial tablet devoted to Confucius, with wooden commemorative inscriptions written by the late President Chiang Ching-kuo and the Qianlong Emperor of the Ching Dynasty. Every year at the time of Teachers' Day on Sept. 28, which is celebrated as Confucius' birthday, the ancient and solemn Eight Rows Dance is held here.
